TRENTON — Senate Majority Leader Barbara Buono has invited fired state education Commissioner Bret Schundler to tell his side of the story before the Senate Legislative Oversight Committee.

Buono announced Thursday that she had filed a request through the Open Public Records Act for all documents concerning the federal Race to the Top grant application.

"Commissioner Schundler's firing has taken this controversy down an entirely new path," the Middlesex County Democrat said in a statement issued today. "His dismissal opens up new avenues of questions to this administration that need to be answered."

"I look forward to hearing the unfiltered truth," Buono said.

Buono sent a letter to Schundler today inviting him to appear before the committee. The hearing will be held Sept 23.

"As the Christie Administration's point person for New Jersey's ultimately unsuccessful Race to the Top funding application, I believe you have a unique perspective as to the breakdown in review which led to the State filing a flawed application," Buono's letter reads.

Buono's hearing is not the only legislative effort to probe the grant failure. Assembly Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver has also called for hearings.

"I expect full cooperation from the executive branch as the Assembly moves forward with its inquiry into this lost funding opportunity," Oliver said today in a prepared release.

The Assembly Appropriations Committee will kick off its hearing on Sept. 7.
