Public Safety
The first duty of government is to keep the public safe and secure. Senator Buono will continue bringing about measures to protect our citizens and our communities with the vigilance and accountability they need and deserve.
New Jersey’s geographic location makes our security an essential issue. Following the 9/11 attacks, Senator Buono fought to enhance our state’s homeland security procedures. She was a prime sponsor of a bill allocating over $27 million to prepare for a bioterrorism attack. Senator Buono will continue pushing for ways to give our police and other law enforcement authorities the tools they need to protect New Jersey’s citizens from future attacks.
However, Senator Buono does not believe public safety begins and ends with fighting terrorism. Fire fighters, EMT personnel, police and first responders need the tools to keep residents safe in their day-to-day lives – from curtailing drunk driving to cracking down on gangs and sexual predators. Senator Buono has fought to fund our police officers with broader tools to protect all New Jersey residents and she’s long-supported strong, sensible gun laws. She fought to upgrade the penalties for failing to register as a sex offender and she’s worked to update New Jersey’s DWI laws.
