Protecting New Jersey’s environment is one of the most important issues facing our state and nation in the 21st century. Senator Buono is holding accountable those who cause damage to our environment, health and economy. She’s long fought to enhance mass transportation, expand the NJ Transit rail system and make commuter rails safer and more efficient.

Combating climate change is Senator Buono’s top environmental priority. She was the prime sponsor of the Global Warming Response Act – mandating a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, followed by a further reduction of emissions to 80% below 2006 levels by 2050. New Jersey is only the 3rd state in the nation make greenhouse gas reduction goals law. Senator Buono also helped create the law establishing minimum energy efficiency standards for certain products, such as refrigerators, televisions and air conditioners. Moreover, she sponsored the law creating a new program removing mercury switches from end-of-life vehicles, as well as legislation requiring the Department of Environment Protection to adopt rules regulating remediation sites.

Senator Buono remains hard at work fostering the development of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies. This commitment will bring about a cleaner, healthier New Jersey, spur an economic engine for sustainable communities and create the high-paying, green-collar jobs of the future. She will continuing the push for investments in technological innovations that protect our environment, save consumers money, wean our nation off its unhealthy, costly addiction to foreign oil and strengthen our state’s economy.
